David Hanner
David Hanner grew up in a musical home where musical performances were abundant and celebrated. He enjoyed a diverse free-lance career and was an instrumental music teacher before auditioning for a position in the Navy Music Program.
Service began in the Pacific Fleet Band in Honolulu, Hawaii and the Atlantic Fleet Band in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1989, he won an audition for The Naval Academy Band and performed in several ensembles including Concert Band, Chamber Winds Ensemble and Wind Quintet. During his time in Annapolis, he researched and documented over 150 plus years of service of the Academy’s band.
Performances with other ensembles and venues have included Charleston Symphony Orchestra, La Orquestra Sinfonica Nacional de Nicaragua, Honolulu Symphony, San Francisco Ballet, Peoples Republic of China Tour (1987), U. S. Navy Band, Carnegie Hall, Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, Neal S. Blaisdell Center, and The Kennedy Center.
The bassoon came into his life at age nine in the public school music program in Dover, Ohio. Later, professional music studies began with Dr. Harold Robison at Ohio University. He received a Bachelor of Music from The Conservatory of Music at Baldwin-Wallace College where he studied with Ronald Phillips and Vaclav Larksar of The Cleveland Orchestra. He earned a Master of Arts from the Rome School of Music at The Catholic University of America, Washington D.C.
In retirement, he developed The Anchors Aweigh Music Tour. This public tour is given several times each summer at the United States Naval Academy and can be found at www.navalacademytourism.com.
Mr. Hanner performs on a custom made Leitzinger Professional Model 1 Bassoon.
